The concierge business is booming big time now with more and more firms springing up and advertising their services to a Nigerian audience. Such companies offer up everything from the uniformed maid with a higher level of education to the well-dressed and well-spoken chauffeur who picks you up when you arrive from your local, regional or international trip, and doubles as a butler and ‘Man Friday’.

The concierge business is not new here in Nigeria because it has always existed albeit in a very crude and unrefined manner as opposed to what the new wave of concierge business owners are packaging.The rich and upper class of society including expatriates have always tapped into this small but existing concierge industry which caters to their every whim, but at a steep price which was unattainable for the middle income and average family that had to rely on relatives, young boys and girls fleeing from hard living conditions of the hinterland. Getting help this way came with a lot of hiccups though, as these young boys and girls were usually ill-prepared for the chores bequeathed on them with attending punitive results. Usually untrained, these services were not well rendered and not well paid for or acknowledged.

The word ‘concierge’ meaning “keeper of the keys”, is a French word. It originated in France where it meant an employee who lives on the premises of an apartment building or hotel and serves as a general property caretaker with duties similar to those of a janitor. However, while the term is most commonly used in hotel environments, its influence can be found everywhere in the world today, from the blistering heat of Dubai to the cooler regions of Russia.

The concierge business has expanded past keeping the keys to an apartment building though. It encompasses a lot more, including providing chauffeur services, house keepers, cooks, stewards, and other personnel who help around the house and office. These personnel can provide both temporary and permanent services and some are known to charge per hour as it obtains in the Western world.

The goal of a personal concierge is to take care of all the odds and ends that get overlooked in the frenetic pace of daily life. A concierge can do the things that have to be done so that you can do the things that you want to do. Just see them as corporate major-domos. All you have to do is imagine it (within reason) and it will be done.

Personal concierge services also have gone virtual. For a set fee, companies and corporations can get a 24-hour-a-day phone and email access to concierges for their employees and clients. These are less costly and less intrusive. Also, some large apartment buildings or group of buildings retain the use of a concierge. The concierge may, for instance, keep the mail of absent dwellers; be entrusted with the apartment keys to deal with emergencies when residents are absent; provide information to residents and guests; provide access control; enforce rules; and act as a go-between for residents and management when management is not on-site.

Concierges are also very useful when you are just starting a business and you cannot afford a PA and or administrative staff just yet. Corporations can also with a set-up fee contract a concierge company for employees and their customers. For employees, it will be included in an employee satisfaction package, while for customers it will be included in customer loyalty schemes. The concierge industry is very popular in the Western world, where it is being utilized for everybody: celebrities, the rich and regular ‘Joes’. Its introduction in Nigeria is gradual, but is still mostly limited to hotels and airports.
